Choosing a Domain Name for your online business
Here is where we explain the background behind
Domain names, how to find a name for your web site, and how to
register for your exclusive use.
In order to allow Internet users to access
your eCommerce website, you will need to find an Internet
name, also known as a "domain name", for your business. Domain
names allow surfers to type in a URL, such as
www.mybusiness.com, and access your web site.
Most Internet names begin with www, which
stands for World Wide Web. The second part (eg mybusiness) is the one you
have to come up with. You can use
letters, numbers or dash ("-") in your name. The
name must be at least 2 characters long, not start or end with
a dash.
The last part is called the
top-level domain. The most popular top-level registrations are .com,
.net and .org:
-
.com - is used for commercial and personal
sites
-
.net - typically used by Internet
infrastructure companies
-
.org - used by non-profit organizations
-
.biz - another business designation
-
.info - for information related websites
There are also country codes such as:
-
.au (Australia)
-
.co.nz (New Zealand)
The country codes are used if you are
setting up an eCommerce web site specific to a country.
So, get on your creative thinking cap. Come up
with a name that best suits your business and is going to be

When you have chosen a likely name and are
ready for registration, you need to go to a
registrar. These companies will help you register and
have it set up so others can access it on the Internet.
Oznet's Domain Names Registry is an example of a
registrar offering cheap domain prices.
Once the Registrar issues the confirmation, no one else will be able
to have it. Usually, once every year or two you
will need to pay for it's continued use. Do not attempt to use
someone else's Trademark. Although it may get approved, the Trademark owner can have it ceased. You are
advised to conduct a Trademark search initially.
As soon as you have the approval you are ready to find a home for your Web site.
